Fulani Herdsmen Terrorise Community In Enugu

Chinwuba Ekwueme, a villager in Egede community in the Udi local council of Enugu state has been murdered by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The Guardian reports that the 42 year old victim was a member of the Egede Neighbourhood Watch. The Fulani herdsmen were reportedly grazing their cattle in the community when they started shooting.
Mr. Donatus Otie, the chairman of the neighbourhood watch narrated that the victim was brutally killed after other members of the vigilante group ran away for their lives
Igwe Polycarp Oyigbo, the traditional ruler of Egede lamented that the killing was becoming a usual recurrence and that the government had yet to address the issue properly.
He noted that the police promised to bring the culprits to justice and said they should keep to their promise as the youth in the community were ready to engage in a reprisal attack but for the intervention of the leadership of the community.
“I do not know whether it would have been better to allow them to take the law into their hands; so government should take appropriate actions to end the menace.”
Clement Amuji, the president general of the Egede town union said they have complained bitterly to security operatives and that the herdsmen were causing a lot of sorrow in the community.
He said: “The attack by these herdsmen has become a menace to our people. We have been complaining to the government; we have written several letters to Udi local government council, and the district police officer, 9th-Mile.
“This has been happening; they have been destroying our crops, raping our women. They killed a young man from Umuanum about three years ago. It is very sad because it has repeated itself.”
